Father Ioannis Siaflekis is a priest in Kokinomilia, Greece. This summer, the forest fires struck. The whole village was engulfed in flames and his church destroyed. Lands, homes and businesses burned. For Father Ioannis, the inferno did not only burn his church and most everything in Kokinomilia, but signified the end of a traditional Evia village. Recovering from the devastation might take years, or even generations. Between August 3 –11, the fires destroyed more than 125,000 acres of land becoming the largest ecological catastrophe in Greece’s modern history. This is the alarming reality of the climate crisis.
