Henry Lenayasa is chief of Archers Post, Samburu County, Kenya. In 2020 his settlement was ravaged by locusts. He tried to help scare them away from crops, but the swarms were of a scale like nothing in recent memory. The plagues were likely intensified by climate change. Human influence has caused the Indian Ocean temperature to increase, in turn increasing frequency of intense rainfall. Locusts thrive after such wet conditions, where swarms can grow exponentially, and eat everything in sight. This is the alarming reality of the climate crisis.
