Hilal and Shameema live in Kashmir. In September 2014, after a raging monsoon, 390 villages in the region, including theirs, were completely submerged. The flooding lasted over 3 weeks. The main cause of the flooding in the area was from torrential rainfall, exacerbated by higher snowmelt runoff from the extensive snow–packs in the mountainous region. As sea and land temperature continues to rise, the number of villages underwater will only increase. This is the alarming reality of the climate crisis.
