Marisa has felt connected to the National Park ever since she was small. She had memories of walking through the natural woodland, and hearing the sounds of the wide range of wildlife. That connection is now severed due to the catastrophic forest fire. A draft UN assessment called the Mediterranean a “climate change hotspot” and said increasing temperatures and aridity had lengthened fire seasons and “doubled potential burnable area”. For Marisa, watching everything burn felt like every fond memory went up in smoke – memories that won’t return in her lifetime. This is the alarming reality of the climate crisis.
